Golden Globes 2016: Capes Are the Number One Accessory of the Night

Published

on

Stars make their mark on the Golden Globes red carpet in many different ways. Sometimes it comes from a surprising hair change à la Kate Hudson or by hiding behind dark shades (we’re talking about you Ricky Gervais!). But this year over eight stars made grand entrances in superwoman-esque capes.

Taraji P. Henson’s white column gown is elegant and simple left solo, but leave it to Henson to put her fierce, sexy, “Cookie”-inspired spin to it with some fierce red carpeting train-posing.

Regina King had the most dramatic version of the trend. While her gold-and-silver high-shine shimmery gown may not have needed much else to command attention, her sweeping white floor-length cape, Coomi earrings and Swarovski crystal-and-pearl adorned Rene Caovilla heels solidified her look to bonafide superhero status.

Cate Blanchett was pretty in pink (and continued in her alien-like style ways) in a romantic fringe design featuring a wrap-around shrug. While Emilia Clarke channeled a dark version of her iconic Game of Thrones cape wardrobe in a black, sheer, embellished version of the style.

Not to cover up her sexy open back (and hide her killer bod!), Jada Pinkett Smith’s emerald gown featured a draped addition.

Viola Davis promised us her dress would be like nothing she’s never worn before, and this embellished Marchesa gown with a matching sheer, sparkly cape definitely lived up to the hype. It’s glitzier than what the star typically wears, and thanks to the shimmery wrap, it makes for a great back view (especially compared to her stylings of 2005).

While we usually reserve our “Most Naked” award of the night for Jennifer Lopez, she surprisingly covered up in a bright yellow caped Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown. (Thankfully that high-slit kept a little bit of the signature J.Lo style we love.)

And finally, Saoirse Ronan channeled a real-life Grecian goddess in an Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane gown with a long, flowing matching train.
