You Might as Well Watch that Controversial ‘SNL’ ISIS Sketch Your Aunt Heard About on ‘Good Morning America’

Published

Funny or not?

Saturday Night Live did a commercial parody this week that was either tasteless and offensive or clever and hilarious, depending who you ask. It was spoof of the trite heartfelt Toyota Super Bowl commercial about a wistful, teary-eyed dad saying goodbye to his daughter as she heads off to join the army. Only instead of joining the army, in the SNL sketch staring Taran Killim and Dakota Johnson, the daughter is joining ISIS.

The joke was obviously inspired by a recent report in The Independent that as many as 60 young British women have traveled to Syria to join ISIS.

Take a look:

Personally—and I cannot stress enough that this view does not represent the views of my employers—I thought it was funny.

Some people agree with me. But a lot of people really, really do not.

I think the ISIS skit was over the line. Not funny, guys … some things are not joke material. That was really, REALLY bad. #SNL

A father dropping his daughter off to join ISIS? Really #SNL? Not cool. #GMA

— Randy Haas (@Randy_Haas) March 1, 2015

Seriously? SNL is being criticized for mocking Isis, and the people who join it? There's no group more deserving of ridicule. Thumbs up #SNL

— Katherine Morrison (@kmorrison) March 1, 2015

SNL skit about ISIS was funny as hell. People need to get a life. Maybe a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend or a gay marriage.

— Bill O'Keefe (@DefendWallSt) March 1, 2015

Wow #SNL just had the balls to make a pretty great ISIS joke!

— TOD (@DualGrey) March 1, 2015

Gas up the plane! SNL producers will be joining Marie Harf for an ISIS field trip to face reality. And that reality is that ISIS kills.

— Lesli Brower (@MarathonMom5) March 1, 2015

OH MY GOD THIS ISIS SKIT IS SO OFFENSIVE #SNL

— Matty (@mattymonsterz) March 1, 2015

Just saw maybe the most unfunny #SNL piece of all time. Is ISIS really a good subject for humor? #nbc And I've loved SNL for decades.

— Ed Tate (@edwardtate) March 1, 2015

#SNL makes #ISIS look funny. Easy to do living on Park Ave protected by NYPD & FBI. Christians being slaughtered in Middle East not laughing

— Green Mountain Skier (@VermontAttorney) March 1, 2015

ISIS: We'll take it from here dad! #snl #hilarious

So where do you stand? Funny or not?
