Kim Deal and Courtney Barnett Chat About Creative Process, Bad Lyrics, More on Talkhouse Podcast

Courtney Barnett and Kim Deal chatted with each other for the latest edition of the Talkhouse Music Podcast. They discussed a number of subjects, such as drinking, the first time they heard their voice recorded, working in the studio, and their experience being 27 years old. You can listen to it above.

At one point, Barnett and Deal discuss their obsessive habits when working on music. “It took me so long to record my first thing,” Barnett said. “I kept demoing stuff over and over and fixing it up, and layering twenty of my own vocals. I tried to turn it exactly the other way around and see if that worked, which is kind of—it’s hard to let go, if that’s what your thing is.”

They also discussed the most embarrassing lyrics they’ve ever written. Barnett pointed toward a demo she recorded when she was 18 or 19, which contain “some serious feelings.” Deal, meanwhile, singled out the Breeders’ “Hellbound”—specifically, the line that goes “It lives, despite the knives internal.”

“I guess it’s not so cringey as it’s just not good,” she said. Don’t get it tattooed on you any time soon, Breeders fans!
