How Kiehl’s Made This Non Beauty Girl Upgrade Her Skincare Routine

I’ve always been skeptical of beauty products whether it be skincare or makeup. Not because I don’t think products work but because finding the one that is right for you feels next to impossible, expensive and the results fall flat.

Not to mention I’ve never been one for a routine, the last thing I save time for is a bedtime checklist. Yet after a five minute in store skin consultation at Kiehl’s I’ve adopted a few unexpected products and a routine that I try very hard to stick to, willingly because it works and it’s easy. So how did a shop visit this cynic into changing a lifetime of disbelief and bad habits?

A basic amalgamation of necessity and facts, I’ll explain.

I stopped by the Kiehl’s flagship store in NYC to turn in a few empty bottles of products for their recycling program. Fully stocked on Creme de Corps Body Lotion I had no intentions on shopping for anything. Yet as the sales associate was stamping my card she asked if I’d like a few samples despite the fact I hadn’t made a purchase. Never one to turn down a Kiehl’s sample, I asked for a few of the scented body washes, nothing major. As she pulled the samples I decided to ask about the Photo-Age Corrector High Potency Spot Treatment that was discontinued.

I have hyper-pigmentation, meaning essentially my skin scars easily so any blemish, rash, bruise, anything that irritates the skin can become a lasting dark spot, so it’s the one thing I try to pay attention to when it comes to skincare. I look for tone and spot correcting features and have become devoted to the Photo-Age Corrector. I hoped maybe Kiehl’s had just reformulated or repackaged it. But no luck. It was truly gone which opened the door to suggestions from the sales associate.

She suggested I try a sample of the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution serum and added it to my little collection of sample packets. I explained I was familiar with the serum and don’t like it nearly as much as the spot corrector. With the spot corrector I had instant results, if I applied it to a dark spot the same day it appeared by the next day that dark skin would flake away leaving no discernible blemish. I began to shut down not wanting to get myself roped into a sales pitch. But it was too late.

Most likely sensing my skepticism asked if I had a few minutes for a facial consultation to “show me how to use” the products. The cheapskate in me heard free facial while the beauty novice in me knew I could use some educating. Not changing a product until it’s discontinued maybe wasn’t the best way to take care of my skin. “Sure” I said with a half hearted smile.

Find out the mind blowing lesson I learned on the next page.
