Teddy Kobain talks his new “Teddy’s Throwback Thursday’s” series and more with OnTheSceneNY (@TeddyKobain)

Teddy Kobain, born Matthew McClain, comes from Mississippi with a sound rooted in introspect. From his first official drop, 2015’s No Fictitious Stories On My Wall, it became apparent that the rising talent was going to always use his sound as a way to express his inner thoughts. Even on the records that are more orientated towards the funner side of life Teddy still sneaks in some knowledge. This knack for placing content in what he does has him catching more eyes and ears daily.

As Teddy Kobain begins his plan to fill August with new music we figured it to be a good time to catch up with him. Throughout the month you can look for the MC to wreck the beats of some of the classics through his “Teddy’s Throwback Thursdays” series. Before he starts the rollout we were able to get some information behind what to expect as well as a few more little gems. Check it out below.

For anyone new to you tell us about yourself?

My real name is Matthew McClain. I was born in Memphis, TN, and I was raised in Oxford, MS. I have traditional morals and values about life that I practice so that I can pass it along to my now 2 year old daughter. Music is my passion and I plan to share it around the world.

What do you think is the most unique thing about your music?

I think the most unique thing(s) about my music is that it’s honest and authentic. I only talk about what I know or experienced throughout my life. I am very observant with my environment.

To date you’ve dropped your debut LP No Fictitious Stories On My Wall and the Freaking Friday Flexing EP. How do you think each of those projects represent you as an artist?

With No Fictitious Stories On My Wall, that was a great introduction to who Teddy Kobain is. I talked about the last 5 years of my life in that project, and was able to create a way of telling my story of growing into a man that I am now. The Freaky Friday Flexing EP was me showing that I can switch it up with different flows and concepts. I think my cover to Yo’ Gotti’s “Down In The DM” caught a lot of attention to me as an artist. The numbers jumped like crazy, so I was satisfied with the Freaky Friday Flexing EP showcasing my talent as an music artist.

The title of the LP stands out to me. What type of Fictitious stories have people been bringing your way?

I appreciate that! Man it’s so many crazy stories I have heard over my time of doing music. I say the most “Fictitious” story I hear a lot be from the guys I know for a fact not out here living a lifestyle they proclaim to be on the mic. I still don’t see how some of these artist feel comfortable not being true to themselves and as an artist. I get a laugh out of hearing guys talk about how many girls they got and what they be doing to women. My expression be those emoji eyes every time lol.

And now I see you’re about to begin the process of a new series ” Teddy’s Throwback Thursday’s”. Obviously the concept is pretty straightforward but what gave you the idea to do it?

The idea came from my manager and myself. We both love music and being creative, and on top of that we enjoyed the response we got from Freak Friday Flexing. I noticed during the week social media celebrate days like #WCW or #TBT, and Plies even birth everybody’s favorite #SPS. I thought it would be a real cool creative way musically to do the same with the days. Freaky Friday Flexing was the first and now it’s time for Throwback Thursday to kickoff.

Is there a particular era of music you’re going to focus on with the series?

Well honestly I could go way back into the early 80’s, but I want everyone to be somewhat on the same page, so I’m going with the 90’s to about the early 2000’s.

Who are some of your favorite artists who are “Throwbacks” in the sense that they are no longer making music?

Pac, Biggie, LL Cool J, and Lauryn Hill.

As far as the tracks that will be released, can I get at least one instrumental that you may be rapping over? I can understand if you want to keep it under wraps but I just had to ask lol.

I won’t share the first song, but I will say that I have been listening to Project Pat’s Life We Live instrumental heavy, still not sure about the other two yet.

Other than the upcoming series what else can people look out for from you and your camp?

After TBT I will be doing one more series called “Sucker Free Sunday” and then start working on an album. I already have some songs started for the album that are really great so far, so I’m taking my time creating this album. We are networking constantly trying to set some shows in stone.

Anything else you want to share before we finish up?

I want to thank everyone who has been supporting the #KobainKampaign this far. Also thank you guys for taking the time out getting to know Teddy Kobain and watching my growth as an artist. #Love
