What makes an idea, a viable business? What does it take to go from a 9-to-5 to 24/7 boss status? Who are the individuals one can look to for guidance?

For many, especially women of color, creating a business in the beauty world is particularly challenging these days. In addition to the industry being saturated, the time and patience it requires to get in is hard. BUT, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for you.

We are happy to be partnering with @glamsquadhair for their first ever beauty empowerment brunch called “Bosses Link Up”, that kicks off Saturday, June 11 at the Macon State Farmers Market in Macon, Georgia (tickets here)! The brunch will be making stops in Atlanta, Savannah, Jacksonville, Miami, New York and Los Angeles.

“The brunch is for women who are interested in health, beauty, business,” said Shemicka Johnson, CEO of Glam Squad Hair. “If you’re looking to start a business and establish your credit, you should be there. If you’re looking to grow your business, you should be there. We’re going to have fun, catered food and plenty of good advice to give.”

Johnson started her hair weave business back in 2011— after owning a tax business and car dealership, previously— upon realizing she had a passion for beauty and fashion. After studying her target market and creating price point, she then drew customers in.

“The hardest thing for me initially was getting my name out there,” she said. “My name was Quality Remy Hair when I first opened up in 2011. But in 2014 I changed the name to Glam Squad Hair, so that it was something people could relate to. Everyone wants to be glamourous. So that’s why one of the slogans we use is, ‘Join the Squad.’ We want to make the cusomter feel like they’re a part of the Glam Squad.”

Two years later, the businesswoman’s hair weave brand has grown tremendously creating brushes, shampoos, edge control, even apparel, cosmetics and lashes. Glam Squad Hair has been worn by Rasheeda and Erica Dixon (VH1’s Love and Hip Hop Atlanta) Natalie Nunn (Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club), and Porsha Williams (Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta).

“I opened my first business in 2007 and the market has just changed so much since. Not only for black women but entrepreneurs as a whole— it’s amazing. Women… we’re taking charge.”

The Glam Squad Hair “Bosses Link Up” beauty brunch will feature Johnson; Tahira Joy-Co, founder of The Cut Life; Dr. Rhonda Travitt, founder of Restoring the Years Global Ministries; Akira J. Dixon, certified credit consultant; and Brandi V, professional MUA.

Not everyone can be a winner. Detroit native and hip-hop sensation 42 Dugg is back with a fiery new single, Win Wit Us. The track, a precursor to his highly anticipated album 4eva Us, Neva Them, showcases Dugg’s signature style and lyrical prowess. In the brand new single, produced by FLEXONTHEBEAT, TyMaz, and Marshak, Dugg calls out those who try to ride his wave without putting in the work, cementing his stance in the rap game. The release is accompanied by an official music video directed by Counter Point, where Dugg and his crew dominate the streets and clubs of Detroit, visually reinforcing his message of loyalty and resilience. Dugg raps in the hard-hitting track:

All of sudden they wanna win wit us / But ain’t spin with us.

Dugg previously teased this new era of his music with a trailer featuring Hill Harper, further building anticipation among his fans. “Win Wit Us” follows a series of recent hits including Wock N Red, SpinDatBac, and Go Again. Earlier this year, Dugg made a triumphant return to the stage with a sold-out “Welcome Home” show at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, featuring appearances by superstars like Meek Mill, Yo Gotti, Lil Baby, and more. Notably, the event saw Dugg unite Detroit’s rival hip-hop factions, Doughboyz Cashout and Team Eastside, in a historic move to end the city’s East-West beef.
